DMU Service provides Digital Mock-Ups with incredible descriptive power for an effective Design Review.

The CAD file of your project is materialised into a true 3D digital prototype, equipped with the functionality you requested and easily controllable, unsurpassed for very striking immersive demonstrations and presentations. DMU Service is a process developed together with design engineers of large offshore vessels, and carried out by the Arsenal-team of VR software and industrial engineers.

How to play with it

The DMU is provided as an application. To run the DMU, a PC in the minimum configuration and your monitor are enough; but it is strongly recommended to use the suggested configuration to to enjoy the great effectiveness of immersive VR using also the HMD Oculus Rift + Touch.

The quality of our DMU suggests using them not only for Design Review, but to show them in Presentations and Fairs: in this case we also recommend 3D projection on a large screen.

A way to navigate for every skill

These different control modes, which are always possible at the same time, allow sophisticated presentations but also give the chance to  customers and visitors to try alone to go through and analyse the DMU.

Features

  • The Digital Mock-Up can be composed of a subassy hierarchy.
  • Each subassy can be hidden, or shown alone.
  • Each subassy can be replaced with other versions.
  • The components of the DMU can be identified by labels and documented by text data.
  • “Heavier” DMUs can be connected by flowing smoothly from one to another, leaving the belief of remaining in one huge DMU.
  • Many Points of View can be set and then chosen by the tablet; this simple examination mode allows in any case to fly and walk with the 3D SpaceMouse.
  • Movements of parts and kinematics, if implemented in the DMU, can be controlled continuously or step by step, and the speeds can be changed.

All operations above are performed via a web-style graphical interface on tablet.

How we do it

Provide us with your CAD files, no matter what software you use, and a description of the features and performance that the DMU must have.

The most obvious features to be defined are:

  • the subassy in which the DMU must be broken down,
  • the parts for which you want to control the movement,
  • the parameters of the movements,
  • labels and text data to be recalled,
  • predetermined points of view.

Regarding  the performance, the requirements could be summarised in resolution and frame-rate (real-time rendering); about this, it is important to decide the degree of geometric detail of the DMU but also the visualisation system.
The DMU is made up of a mesh, that is a dense grid of triangles that forms its surfaces; the greater the detail of the DMU (even washers?), the greater the amount of triangles (hundreds of thousands, millions …), and the greater the power required by your workstation. And again, the higher the resolution and the rendering frame-rate, the greater the power required by your workstation.
Ensuring the balance between all these factors to meet your expectations within your budget is part of our experience, which counts dozens of DMUs with huge geometries.

It must be said that in order to reduce the degree of detail of your CAD model, careful work must be done to meet the objectives set for the DMU, and this affects time and cost.
However, this aspect of the process should not be dramatised: the power of the current graphics cards now makes it possible to render huge masses of triangles with high frame-rates, and this power promises to rise quickly to unimaginable values up to five years ago, and for this we must thank the explosion of Virtual Reality and its definitive consolidation in the culture of the whole world.

Q: How long does it take to get a DMU?
A: From a few days to a few weeks, it depends on the complexity but also on your confidence in the CAD model that you deliver to us:  how many times will you have to modify your model while we are working?  On the other hand this is not a problem, precisely because the DMU is the support for a dynamic, iterative and interactive design process, unlike an aesthetic video made to be played only once!
